The Committee of the International Colonial Exhibition at Amsterdam has been kind enough to send to me a collection of Mammals made by Mr. F. von Feber during his residence in N. Celebes and W. Sumatra. The request was that I should subject the collection to a systematic review I feel sure that this review contains many facts interesting to zoologists, as it embraces certain very rare and partly unknown species and at the same time gives a very good idea of the peculiar Fauna of Celebes. The Mammals have been collected in the neighborhood of Loeboe Basong, Priaman, West-Sumatra, and in the vicinity of Amoerang, North-West-Celebes. |

Lansberge, J.W. van. |

Luciolam quasi simulans. Corpus oblongum, dense breviter pilosum; caput sat magnum, oculis magnis, globosis, subtus fere contiguis; antennæ duodecim-articulatæ, articulis tertio ad undecimum ramum duplicem emittentibus, ramis haud longis, subflabellatis, pectiniformibus; palpis omnibus articulis ultimis apice acuminatis. Tarsi quinque-articulati, haud membranacei, ungues simplices. The general appearance of this remarkable genus is that of some of the Lampyridæ, and I should have placed it in that family, but that the abdominal structure is so different to anything among the Luciolides with which I am yet acquainted. At the same time the 12-jointed antennæ and their mode... |

Lixus Ritsemae. Apion lethale. Lamiidae. Coptops intermissa. Philicus, n. g. » dialloides. |

Long. 4 3/4 mill. — Ovalis, convexus, postice obtusus; supra tenuissime longitudinaliter reticulatus, tuberculis minimis et obsoletis undique irroratus; capite pronotoque rufo-ferrugineis, hoc in medio macula vaga vix obscuriore; elytris piceo-ferrugineis, paululum iridescentibus, ad latera et humeros leviter dilutioribus, postice aliquot punctis plus minus seriatim dispositis impressis. Corpore subtus, pedibus antennisque rufo-ferrugineis. |

A. lacteo affinis, minor, vestitura magis brunnea; macula media elytrorum marginali, parva, arcuata. — Long. 17 — 18 mill., lat. 6 mill. |

The profound and extensive studies upon the American Squirrels by Allen 1) and Alston 2), have made this group, we must confess it, one of the best known among the Mammals. At the same time however the named authors have shown that it is almost an impossibility to give a good and exact diagnosis of an American Squirrel, because the specimens of a given species differ, so to say, infinitely in the hairiness of the ears, which are tufted or not tufted, in the length and strength of the body, a. s. o. The difficulty increases as these variations are to be found not constantly in individuals from different localities, but as they often are present in individuals from the same locality and gathered on the same day or in the same season. And this is a rule with... |

Having completed the examination of the Earthworms, brought home by the Sumatra-Expedition 1) and destined to be deposited in the collections of the Leyden Museum, I was surprised to find in the latter some specimens of tropical Lumbricina, hitherto not described. These specimens, being collected a long time ago by von Siebold, Kuhl & van Hasselt and Horstock, are not in a very good state of preservation (as was also the case with the worms from the Sumatra-expedition), and so I regret to be not able to give always so exact a description, as should be desirable. Before undertaking the description of the different species, it will be necessary to give some details about the history of the genus Megascolex, because there seems to exist a good deal of... |

5 ♀ (which wholly agree with one another) and 1 ♂ (which differs from the females by its more coarsely faceted eyes which are moreover more prominent and more approximate on the middle of the face, and by the narrower and more elongate apical segment of the abdomen 1)) were sent over from Serdang (East Sumatra) by Dr. B. Hagen to whom I dedicate the species. Very close to I. forficuloides Fairm. of Borneo, and, judging from the description (Stett. Ent. Zeit. 1867. p. 114), agreeing with it in every respect besides in the following: the head is black with the face and a small spot beyond the base of the eyes yellow; the black lateral band of the elytra suddenly narrows on the apical third (except in the male specimen); the three basal segments of the... |
